Clean Cult Hits Target Shelves with Sleek, Sustainable Refill System
Clean Cult offers eco-friendly cleaning products designed to reduce plastic waste through a refillable system.
Clean Cult, the eco-conscious home care brand co-founded by Ryan Lupberger and Zachary Bedrosian, just brought its redesigned refill system to as many as 1,800 Target stores nationwide. The launch marks a major milestone in the brand’s mission to reduce plastic waste—with sleek, ready-to-use aluminum bottles paired with recyclable paperboard cartons that make refilling easier and more appealing for the average consumer.
“Target is where home care meets lifestyle, and now, it’s where sustainability becomes second nature,” Lupberger said. “This launch is about more than shelf space. It’s about meeting millions of consumers with products that are effective, beautiful, and better for the planet, at a price point that doesn’t ask them to think twice.”
Meeting Shoppers Where They Are
The new system includes 17 SKUs across hand soap, dish soap, all-purpose cleaner, and laundry detergent—now available in three new scents: Pink Grapefruit, Water Blossom, and Fresh Rain. After learning that consumers found their previous glass bottle format too inconvenient, Clean Cult shifted to prefilled aluminum pump bottles to remove friction. “The glass format required too much behavior change,” Lupberger admitted. The aluminum version now comes with a thicker material to prevent denting, structural improvements for durability, and protective packaging for smoother shipping.
Design That Tells a Story
To bring the packaging refresh to life, Clean Cult partnered with U.K.-based design studio Robot Food. The result? Metallic aluminum bottles with partially unprinted designs and botanical imagery that reflect scent and sustainability without compromising clarity. “We really had to balance the clarity of the aluminum to call out the value prop alongside being at the exact same price as plastic bottles,” Lupberger noted. Meanwhile, the gabletop refill cartons also got a design lift—with lighter tones and stronger scent cues for more shelf impact.
Sustainability, Down to the Last Detail
Clean Cult’s updated system isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s a logistical win. The paperboard cartons ship flat, allowing up to 26,000 units per pallet compared to just 600 plastic bottles. That significantly cuts down on transportation emissions and cost. The cartons are recyclable in about 70% of U.S. communities, while the aluminum bottles can be reused for years and recycled indefinitely once retired.
At $4.99 for a 12-ounce aluminum bottle and $7.99 for a 32-ounce refill carton, Clean Cult is proving that sustainability doesn’t have to come at a premium.
