Treasure Hunts, Not Chore Lists: Martie’s Secret to 70% Off Groceries and More
Martie is an online marketplace that offers discounted prices on overstock and liquidated food and consumer packaged goods (CPG), providing savings while helping reduce food waste.
The average grocery run is a grind. But for over half a million shoppers, Martie has made it a thrill ride of unexpected finds and serious savings.
Founded by Louise Fritjofsson and Kari Morris in 2021, Martie is an online grocery marketplace that turns overstock and returns into deep discounts. Customers can browse shelf-stable foods, home goods, pet supplies, and now even open-box cookware—often at up to 70% off retail prices. Think: premium snacks, candles, and cashew butter spreads for a fraction of what you’d pay in-store, plus free shipping over $50 and no membership fees.
It’s not just a coupon hack. It’s a full-blown discovery engine.
The Thrill of the Scroll
Shoppers aren’t coming to Martie with a grocery list—they’re coming for the treasure hunt. “They want to go through everything that we have,” Fritjofsson explained. Over 60% of users open the app simply to explore what’s new, with 40–60 new items dropping daily and 300 per week on average.
Martie partners with brands to resell overstock: products that are perfectly fine but hard to place—think seasonal packaging or minor design updates. That means steep discounts for consumers, better sell-through for brands, and fewer products sent to landfills.
It’s a win-win that adds a bit of joy to the weekly shop. “We thought everyone would be driven by just the prices,” Fritjofsson said, “but it’s turning out to be this amazing way for people to try new brands and products without taking the plunge to pay full price.”
New Moves in Re-Commerce
Now Martie is expanding beyond groceries. Their latest rollout includes re-commerce: high-quality returned goods (like kitchenware) that are still in their original packaging but often destined for the trash. According to the team, more than 9.5 billion pounds of returned products went to landfills in 2022 alone.
Martie’s re-commerce section launched last month with Moritz & Moritz, a cookware brand, and gives customers access to discounted “open box” items that still carry the standard warranty.
It’s a natural next step for a company solving one of retail’s messiest problems—what to do with great inventory that’s hard to place.
What’s in a Name?
So why “Martie”? It’s part ‘mart,’ part ‘smartie,’ and partly because the domain was actually available. As Fritjofsson joked, naming Martie took longer than naming her kids.
Call it a clearance aisle with a conscience or a deal-hunting adventure with design cred—either way, Martie’s growing fast, expanding its categories, and making sustainable shopping feel surprisingly fun again.
