Lumen Orbit Exits Stealth and Secures $2.4M for Space Data Centers
Lumen orbit provides in-orbit cloud computing.
Bellevue, Washington-based startup Lumen Orbit has swiftly garnered attention by closing a $2.4 million pre-seed investment round within just three months of its inception. Led by CEO Philip Johnston, a former McKinsey & Co. associate, alongside co-founders Ezra Feilden and Adi Oltean, the company aims to revolutionize data processing by launching a constellation of satellites into orbit. This innovative approach involves onboard AI-powered data processing, allowing for efficient transmission of insights to customers on Earth, thereby reducing bandwidth demands and associated costs.
With partnerships established for satellite design and FCC filings in progress, Lumen Orbit anticipates launching a prototype in May 2025, followed by subsequent satellite deployment. Notably, the company has already secured commitments exceeding $30 million in memorandums of understanding from prospective customers. While competing projects such as ASCEND and Axiom Space also explore space-based data centers, Lumen remains confident in its distinctive service offering, positioning itself as a frontrunner in the evolving landscape of space-based data processing.
