Esembly Navigates Global Tariff Shifts to Keep Baby Care Affordable
Esembly offers a sustainable diapering system that includes reusable cloth diapers and eco-friendly home goods.
Running a baby brand in today’s economy means more than just stocking shelves—it’s about surviving supply chain shocks, global tariffs, and unpredictable policy shifts. Brooklyn-based Esembly, the eco-conscious baby care company known for its sustainable cloth diapers, is living that reality in real time.
Co-founder Liz Turrigiano recently spoke to CBS News about the mounting pressure tariffs are putting on small businesses like hers. Esembly sources key product components globally—organic cotton diapers from Pakistan and recycled plastic packaging from China—while still manufacturing some items like skincare and laundry essentials in the U.S. Despite this hybrid model, rising and fluctuating tariffs make even forward planning a spreadsheet nightmare.
“We don’t even know what to expect,” said Turrigiano, who described building out multiple scenarios—from 10% to 145% tariff impacts. In April, Esembly faced a sudden 39% tariff hike on a prepaid order from Pakistan. The cash squeeze is real: “We don’t have that kind of cash sitting around.”
What makes Esembly’s challenge more striking is their commitment to keeping prices reasonable—despite every financial incentive to raise them. Turrigiano says moving all manufacturing stateside isn’t a viable option either: “We’re looking at, like, $30, $40 diapers.”
While the 90-day pause on some China tariffs offers a sliver of relief, uncertainty looms large. Still, Esembly remains firm in its mission to provide high-quality, accessible, and sustainable baby care. “We’re hoping for some miracle to make it so we don’t have to raise prices,” Turrigiano shared.
In an era of shifting policy and stretched margins, Esembly isn’t just selling diapers—it’s standing for resilience, affordability, and conscious care for families.
